According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call of a disturbance at an apartment complex. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Fortson’s family, alleges that deputies entered the wrong unit and encountered Fortson, who was home alone at the time. Crump further states that Fortson was on a video call when the officers burst in and, upon seeing him holding a legally owned gun, opened fire.
Body camera footage released by the Sheriff’s Office shows the deputies announcing themselves before breaching the apartment door. However, the attorney for the family contends that this short timeframe did not allow Fortson adequate time to react or understand the situation. The footage also shows Fortson being shot multiple times.
Fortson’s death has drawn comparisons to other recent cases involving Black individuals killed by police in their own homes, often due to mistaken addresses or seemingly excessive force. His family and their legal team are calling for a transparent investigation into the shooting.
“Senior Airman Fortson was a hero, serving his country honorably,” said Crump in a statement. “His death at the hands of those who are sworn to protect is an unjustifiable killing. We demand justice for Roger and his family.”
Fortson’s death has also struck a chord within the military community. Hurlburt Field, where Fortson was stationed, released a statement expressing their condolences and praising his service. “Senior Airman Fortson was a valued member of our team, and his loss is deeply felt,” the statement read.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. However, the incident has reignited local and national conversations about police procedures, racial profiling, and the sanctity of one’s home.
Local activists are planning peaceful protests to demand answers and call for reform. The NAACP has also weighed in, urging a thorough and impartial investigation.
