“Bridgerton” Season 3 Part 2 Is the Most Fascinating Chapter of the Franchise Yet: TV Review

In the enchanting world of “Bridgerton,” Season 3 takes a bold turn. The second half of this season, arguably some of the most pivotal chapters in the franchise, defies fairytale conventions. Instead, it delves into the complexities of relationships, societal expectations, and the courage to face consequences.

As Penelope Featherington (played by Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) transition from friends to lovers, they grapple with the need for openness and honesty. Their union challenges societal norms, demanding that they stand against tradition for their love to thrive. Episode 5, aptly titled “Tik Tok,” opens with Penelope writing as Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews). Her enchanted evening with Colin, following a steamy carriage ride and an impromptu proposal, leaves her exhilarated. Yet, her secret identity as the mysterious gossip columnist looms over their relationship. Penelope and Colin must decide what sacrifices they’re willing to make for their marriage to succeed.

While Penelope and Colin remain central, the women surrounding them also shine. Lady Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell), Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jesse), Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh), and Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) continue to hold their ground. However, it’s Portia Featherington (Polly Walker), Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd), and Cressida Cowper (Jessica Madsen) who undergo significant transformations.

Portia, despite her imperfect attitude toward Pen, fiercely protects her daughters and strives for their success in society. Francesca, initially content in her connection with Lord John Stirling, realizes that longing chemistry outweighs mere contentment. And then there’s Cressida, who faces an arranged engagement to a vile older man. Desperate for freedom, she resorts to drastic measures, including attempting to claim the Lady Whistledown name for herself
