Johannesburg, South Africa – A tragic scene unfolded in the heart of Johannesburg’s city center on Tuesday morning when a multi-story building suddenly collapsed, leaving at least three people dead and dozens more trapped beneath the rubble. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time when the four-story structure, which housed a range of businesses including a textile factory, came crumbling down in a matter of seconds. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a thunderous boom before seeing clouds of dust and debris engulfing the surrounding area.
“It was like an earthquake,” recalled Thabo Motsumi, a street vendor who had been selling goods nearby. “One minute everything was normal, and the next, the building just pancaked right in front of me. The noise was deafening, and then there was just this eerie silence as the dust settled.”
Emergency services, including fire crews, paramedics, and search and rescue teams, descended on the scene within minutes. However, their efforts to reach those trapped have been hampered by the precarious state of the remaining structure and the sheer volume of debris scattered across the site.

“We are doing everything in our power to reach those still trapped as quickly as possible,” stated Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson, Tshepo Mokoena. “However, the situation is extremely delicate, and we must proceed with caution to ensure the safety of our teams and any survivors we encounter.”
