Djokovic Gets Soaked, Not Showered with Cheers: Hit by Water Bottle During Italian Open Autograph Session.

Novak Djokovic, the world number one and 24-time Grand Slam champion, had a moment of shock following his second-round victory at the Italian Open. As Djokovic graciously signed autographs for fans after defeating Corentin Moutet, an unexpected projectile landed squarely on his head. Thankfully, reports suggest it was an accident, but it left the tennis star shaken and required medical attention.

The incident occurred on May 10th, 2024, as Djokovic exited center court. Footage circulating online shows him signing autographs when a metal water bottle tumbles from a spectator’s backpack, striking Djokovic on the head. The impact sent him crouching down in pain, clutching his head. Security personnel rushed to his aid, and Djokovic was eventually escorted off the court.

Tournament organizers quickly released a statement, confirming the incident and assuring fans that Djokovic’s condition was not a cause for concern. “Novak Djokovic on leaving Centre Court after his match was hit on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs,” the statement read. “He received medical attention and has already left the Foro Italico to return to his hotel.”

Thankfully, the blow did not cause serious injury. Italian Tennis Federation spokesman Alessandro Catapano confirmed that Djokovic sustained minor bleeding but did not require stitches. “He was upset, but he seems OK,” Catapano added. Djokovic himself took to social media later that evening, reassuring fans of his well-being. “Thank you for the messages of concern,” he wrote. “This was an accident and I am fine, resting at the hotel with an ice pack. See you all on Sunday.”

While the incident appears to be unintentional, it raises concerns about player safety during fan interactions. Djokovic is known for his dedication to his fans, and autograph sessions are a cherished tradition in tennis. However, this incident highlights the potential risks involved. Tournament organizers will likely review their security protocols to minimize such occurrences in the future.

The incident also sparked discussions about fan etiquette. While enthusiastic support is always welcome, respecting player boundaries is crucial. Maintaining a safe distance and avoiding throwing objects, even unintentionally, is paramount.
