Saints shatter records in romp of Rider; secure massive win in MAAC opener

The Siena women’s lacrosse team displayed an unstoppable performance on a record-breaking day at Hickey Field. Not even the rain, sleet, or snow could hinder their dominance. In a 22-4 trouncing against MAAC newcomer Rider, the Saints achieved a remarkable feat: they set a program record for the largest margin of victory in the 28-year history of the team. The previous largest margin of victory had been 17 goals on two occasions.

Sarah Irish’s goal scored with just three seconds remaining, pushed the lead to 18 goals, ensuring that a new record would be established. This achievement also matched the program’s record for the most goals scored in a single game—22 goals, achieved previously against Hartford on March 13, 2019

Let’s delve into the impressive details of their performance

  • Draw Controls: Siena dominated in nearly every facet of the game, winning 26 out of 30 draw controls as a team. Senior Taryn Asselin set a new single-game program record for the most draw controls in a game with 15. Earlier this season, Asselin had tied the mark in a win against Le Moyne on March 2 and came close to breaking it with 12 draw controls in a win against then #18 Army West Point on February 17.
  • Offensive Stars: Junior Grace Dobrzynski led the Saints with an eight-point afternoon (two goals and a career-high six assists). Meanwhile, junior Kelly Logue surpassed 100 points in her career with a six-point day (three goals and three assists).
  • Game Progression: Siena established a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, with freshman Olivia Nicholson and senior Rebecca Gilhooley each contributing two goals. The Saints continued their dominance, outscoring the Broncs 6-2 in the second quarter to take a 13-3 lead into halftime. They maintained their relentless pace in the second half, outscoring the Broncs 9-1 to secure the massive victory.
  • Defensive Strength: Graduate student Jenna Colabufo played a crucial role on defense, causing four turnovers in the game and reaching 50 turnovers for her Saints’ career.

Despite being in their first season of women’s lacrosse, the Broncos (6-3, 0-1) had previously performed well. However, they were held to just nine shots, including only six on goal, by the formidable Siena defense. Even the MAAC’s top player for draw controls and one of the best scorers, Katie Walsh, was limited to just two draw controls and one goal against the Saints.

In summary, Siena’s record-breaking victory showcased their prowess and left no doubt about their dominance in the MAAC opener. 🥍🔥
