Wild Thang Wins 2024 ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’ Contest

In a surprising turn of events, Wild Thang, an 8-year-old Pekingese, clinched the title of the “World’s Ugliest Dog” at the 2024 competition held during the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. For Wild Thang and his owner, Ann Lewis, this victory was not an insult but an honor. Let’s delve into the heartwarming story behind this unusual accolade.

The World’s Ugliest Dog contest, which has been running since 1988, aims to celebrate the unique beauty of dogs that don’t conform to traditional standards. Rather than poking fun at their appearance, the event highlights the wonderful characters and resilience of these animals. Most of the contestants are shelter dogs or have grown up on the streets, emphasizing the importance of rescuing and adopting pets.

Wild Thang, with his perpetually hanging tongue, had been a runner-up in the competition for three consecutive years. His perseverance and unwavering spirit finally paid off as he claimed the coveted first-place position. Fiona Ma, one of the judges and California’s 34th State Treasurer, explained that Wild Thang’s consistent efforts touched their hearts: “The fact that he was the bridesmaid and never the bride, I think really tugged at our heartstrings. He deserved to win.”

The 2024 runner-up was Rome, a 14-year-old pug who walks with an attached wheelchair on his hind legs. Rome spends his time visiting hospice patients and educating children about the importance of adopting senior rescue pets. His owner, Michelle Grady, expressed her excitement, emphasizing that the contest celebrates dogs that are “perfectly imperfect.”

Wild Thang’s victory came with a $5,000 check and an exciting trip to New York City, where he was set to be featured on NBC’s Today show. This spotlight was a long time coming for the resilient Pekingese, who had competed in the contest five times. Now, he stands proudly as the reigning “World’s Ugliest Dog.”

As we celebrate Wild Thang’s triumph, let’s remember that beauty lies beyond appearances. These dogs teach us valuable lessons about resilience, acceptance, and the joy of being perfectly imperfect. So, here’s to Wild Thang—the unlikely champion who stole our hearts and reminded us that true beauty is more than skin deep
